TUNISIAN BRASS CANDLE HOLDER
Handmade in a small atelier in the old medina of Tunis, these brass candlestick holders are small and lightweight (suited to hand-luggage-only travel), yet enact a notable difference in the ambience of my home practice / dinner prep / bedtime ritual when I’m on the road.
Despite language limitations on my part, Lauini and his small team of craftsmen were sweetly receptive to my requests to create a design from scratch; something not already on their shelves; something simple and clean-cut. Amidst the clanging and clacking of a workshop-riddled alleyway, they tried out different forms and formats in response to my sketches until it felt right. In some places I can see traces of the joinery work; marks that wouldn’t typically be there on pieces they are more accustomed to creating, and I love them. Each one reminding me of the individuals, the hands, doing the making; the personal efforts to honour even a temporary collaboration, and to deliver something special.
